A Crazy Rich Guide to Singapore

Crazy Rich Asians is finally out in Australia and I was lucky enough to visit Singapore for the Singapore premiere of the film, and also explore some of the locations where the movie was shot! If you’re heading to Singapore and want to have a Crazy Rich Experience, here’s some of the place you can explore in Singapore! I’ve also included some personal favourite spots (not from the film) which you can also check out while you’re in town.

Gibson Bar

In a particularly memorable scene, you’ll find Rachel and Peik Lin catching up over alfresco cocktails at a bar on Bukit Pasoh Road in Chinatown. This bar is called Gibson Bar. You can swing by here for some really great cocktails and bar snacks and even recreate the scene from the film! The really cool bar is on level two, but you can take your photos before heading upstairs for some insanely creative cocktails.

Kim Choo Kueh Chang

Are you a fan of kueh like me? Try Kim Choo’s famous Kueh located on Joo Chiat Road in Katong! We came here not only for the kueh but also to learn a little more about perenakan culture, which happens to be a part of my heritage! Oh and the Kueh was delicious (of course).

328 Katong Laksa

Singapore’s famous Katong Laksa! Why is it famous you ask? Gordon Ramsay could be accredited for popularising this laksa spot, located in Katong. He lost a challenge to the owners in 2013, which contested could create a better laksa. Of course, it’s roots go back way before Gordon ever came to Singapore, but now many flock to this spot to taste what is often regarded as one of Singapore’s best. It’s subjective of course, but definitely worth a try! You might notice the lack of chopsticks below, and that’s because the noodles are cut short so that the whole dish can be eaten with just a spoon! The small laksa is priced at $5.35 (pictured below) and the otah is S$1.40.

Perenakan Houses in Katong

Insta worthy photos can be found all throughout Katong thanks to these Perenakan houses. I just love the detail on some of these buildings, and they are so well preserved too!

Chijmes Hall

The iconic and very extra wedding scene from Crazy Rich Asians was filmed inside Chijmes Hall, located in Bugis. I was so shocked to learn that the entire scene was filmed here, and not on a set. We were told that it took one week, including three days of set up and three days of filming. You can come here to check out the grounds after some shopping, as it’s only a ten minute walk from Bugis station. Unfortunately, the inside is not open to the public, as it’s exclusively used for weddings and events, but you can still peek through the glass windows.

Coriander Leaf

A great spot to stop at after exploring Chimes Hall, Coriander Leaf infuses some of the best dishes from all over Asia! We enjoyed watermelon salad, salted egg yolk soft shell crab, momo dumplings, banana fritters with avocado ice cream & more. It’s a great place to relax and get a taste of some really unique flavours from all over asia.

Little India

Below you’ll find a famous icon of Little India, Tan Teng Niah House. There’s so much to do in Little India, from shopping for food and clothing, to a little sight seeing. The shopping is really great if you’re in the market for jewellery and textiles. It’s always really busy whenever I come here and I really love the hustle and bustle of this place.

Gardens By The Bay & Marina Bay Sands

The wedding party scene was filmed at the famous Gardens By The Bay. Gardens By The Bay is such an iconic must do if you’ve never been to Singapore before. I’ve been here countless times but there’s always something new and exciting going on here. The Flower Dome exhibits change their displays quite often & the Supertree Grove light show also changes every few months (a must see at night). We visited just before sunset and got to see it just as the Supertrees lit up. Such a crazy cool experience!

Marina Bay Sands is also a must see as it was also included in the film, and is a Singapore icon! Make sure you head up for dinner at CE LA VIE for a dinner with Singapore’s skyline as your backdrop.

Makansutra Gluttons Bay

Hawker food with a Marina Bay view! We enjoyed our final meal at Makansutra Glutton’s Bay and were treated to some of Singapore’s best dishes, including chicken rice, chilli mud crab, char kway teow, and so much more as you’ll see below! This might not be the same hawker they feasted at in the film, but it’s definitely a spot to check out to experience Singapore’s best flavours yourself!

Atlas Bar

This building was located across from our hotel (Andaz Singapore) and it looks like it’s stuck in time at first glance. Once you wander inside it’s doors you’ll really marvel at the size and decor of this place. This gothic bar needs to be checked out if you have the time during your visit. It’s also very ‘Crazy Rich’ style too! I haven’t shared too many photos as I don’t want to ruin your experience. Please see it for yourself & report back!
